Plight of MV SUN Sea and Ocean Lady Refugees

Dear Right Hon. Prime Minister,

This is in reference to the brief conversation I had with you today regarding MVSun and Ocean Lady refugees when you visited Malvern Resource Centre, No.90 Littles Road, Scarborough in the company of Hon. Gary Anandasangaree, MP (Scarborough – Rouge Park).

The Hon. Prime Minister told me the Hon. Minister for Immigration and yourself are at it.

I attach herewith a letter I addressed to Hon. McCallum, P.C., M.P. and former

Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship for ease of reference.

The Hon. Prime Minister is aware how the previous Conservative government treated the 492 refugees on board the MV Sun Sea on August 13, 2010 arrived off the shores of British Columbia. The less said is better. They were called names not by ordinary people but by Hon. Ministers as ‘illegitimate’ refugee claimants. The then Immigration Minister Hon. Jason Kenney and National Security Minister Vic Toews lost no time and vied with each other to brand the poor boat people who braved the rough oceans as “Tiger Terrorists” “Queue – jumpers” “breeders”; etc. It is an unfortunate mind-set on the part of the Ministers who prejudged the boat people without any evidence.

I am appealing to the Hon. Prime Minister to consider the application for political asylum compassionately and do the needful. Though some refugees have been accepted there are many still waiting   for more than 6 years.
