காலனித்துவக் காலத் தமிழர் வாழ்வியலைப் பதிவு செய்த அரிய புகைப்படம்.

இந்த அரிய புகைப்படம் Charles T. Scowen & Co. நிறுவனத்திற்குச் சொந்தமானதாகக் கருதப்படுகிறது. 1876 முதல் 1893 காலப்பகுதியில் அன்றைய சிலோன் (இன்றைய இலங்கை) பகுதியில் எடுக்கப்பட்ட இந்தப் படம், பெயர் தெரியாத ஒரு தமிழ்ச் சிறுமியை சித்தரிக்கிறது.

அவர் அணிந்திருக்கும் கட்டம் போட்ட பருத்திச் சேலை, அக்காலத் தமிழர்களின் அன்றாட உடைமுறையை வெளிப்படுத்துகிறது. அதைவிட முக்கியமாக, இந்தப் புகைப்படம் அக்காலத் தமிழர் அணிந்திருந்த பாரம்பரிய அணிகலன்களை நமக்கு தெளிவாகப் பதிவு செய்து வைத்துள்ளது.

படத்தில் காணப்படும் அணிகலன்கள்:

• தண்டட்டி (தண்டட்டி) / பாம்படம் (பாம்படம்): நீண்ட காதுமடல்களில் தொங்கும் பெரிய, கனமான காதணிகள் தண்டட்டி அல்லது பாம்படம் என அழைக்கப்படுகின்றன. இவ்வகை காதணிகள் தமிழ்நாடு மற்றும் இலங்கைத் தமிழர் சமூகங்களில் பரவலாக அணியப்பட்டன. பாம்படம் என்ற பெயர் பாம்பின் விரிந்த படத்தை (நாகப்படம்) ஒத்த வடிவமைப்பிலிருந்து உருவானது. இதில் உருண்டை, உருளை மற்றும் பல்வேறு வடிவியல் கூறுகள் இணைந்து காணப்படும். தண்டட்டி இதனுடன் தொடர்புடைய மற்றொரு வடிவமாகும்; இதில் உருளை, கூம்பு மற்றும் சதுர வடிவங்கள் போன்ற வலுவான வடிவியல் அமைப்புகள் காணப்படும். பிராந்திய மரபுகளின்படி இந்த இரண்டு பெயர்களும் சில சமயங்களில் ஒன்றுக்கொன்று மாற்றிப் பயன்படுத்தப்படுகின்றன.

• மேல் காது ஆபரணம்: காதின் மேற்பகுதியில் (Helix) சிறிய ஆபரணம் அணிந்திருப்பது தெரிகிறது. பெரிய காதணிகளுடன் இணைந்து மேல் காதிலும் ஆபரணம் அணிவது அக்காலத் தமிழ்ப் பெண்களின் வழக்கமாக இருந்தது.

• வளையல்கள்: இரு கைகளிலும் பல அடுக்குகளாக வளையல்கள் அணிந்துள்ளார். இவ்வளையல்கள் வெண்கலம், வெள்ளி, செம்புக் கலவை அல்லது தங்கம் ஆகியவற்றால் செய்யப்பட்டவை. சமூக நிலை மற்றும் பிராந்திய மரபுகளுக்கேற்ப இவற்றின் பொருள் மாறுபட்டாலும், வளையல்கள் தமிழ்ப் பெண்களின் அன்றாட அணிகலன்களில் முக்கிய இடம் பெற்றிருந்தன.

இது அரச குடும்ப உருவப்படமல்ல; மாறாக, இனவியல் (Ethnographic) புகைப்படக்கலையின் முக்கிய எடுத்துக்காட்டாகும். உடை, அணிகலன் மற்றும் வாழ்வியல் மரபுகளைப் பதிவு செய்துள்ள இந்தப் புகைப்படம், 19ஆம் நூற்றாண்டின் தமிழர் சமூக வரலாற்றை புரிந்துகொள்ள உதவும் அரிய காட்சிப்பதிவாகும்.

This remarkable portrait, attributed to Charles T. Scowen & Co., was taken in Sri Lanka (then Ceylon) between 1876 and 1893. It depicts an unidentified Tamil girl, offering a rare visual record of Tamil life and attire during the late nineteenth century.

The young girl is dressed in a checked cotton sari, draped in a simple style commonly worn for everyday use. More importantly, the photograph preserves valuable details of traditional Tamil jewellery that was once widely worn across both Tamil Nadu and Sri Lanka.

Among the ornaments visible are:

• Thandatti (தண்டட்டி) / Pampadam (பாம்படம்): The large, heavy ornaments suspended from her elongated earlobes are traditional Tamil ear ornaments known as Thandatti or Pampadam, worn by women of several Tamil communities. Pampadam (பாம்பு + படம்) derives its name from the hood of a cobra, with its abstract design featuring hollow globes, cylinders, and geometric forms resembling a stylized serpent’s hood. Thandatti is a closely related variety characterized by bold geometric shapes, often incorporating cylindrical, conical, or square elements. The two names are sometimes used interchangeably depending on regional traditions.

• Upper Ear Ornament (மேல் காது ஆபரணம்): A smaller ornament is visible on the upper cartilage (helix) of the ear. Such upper-ear studs or rings were traditionally worn together with the larger earlobe ornaments, completing the elaborate ear adornment.

• Valayal (வளையல்) – Traditional Bangles (வளையல்கள்): She wears multiple stacked Valayal on both wrists. These bangles were commonly crafted from brass, silver, copper alloy, or gold, depending on the wearer’s social status and regional customs, and formed an essential part of everyday Tamil adornment.

Rather than a formal royal portrait, this image belongs to the tradition of ethnographic photography, documenting the clothing, ornaments, and cultural identity of ordinary people during the colonial period. Such photographs are invaluable historical records, preserving aspects of everyday Tamil life that written sources often overlook.
