D.B.S. Jeyaraj

Veteran journalist and columnist D.B.S. Jeyaraj passed away in Canada yesterday, marking the end of a distinguished journalistic career that spanned nearly five decades.

He was a longstanding columnist for the Daily FT, where his work continued to attract a dedicated readership.

Jeyaraj remained an influential voice among readers in Sri Lanka and the global Tamil diaspora, with his work often serving as a reference point for understanding key political and historical developments.

Born on 21 May 1954, Jeyaraj was educated at S. Thomas’ Preparatory School in Colombo and later at Jaffna College. He initially pursued legal studies, but in 1977 chose to leave law behind to fully commit himself to journalism, beginning his media career at the Virakesari newspaper.

Over the years, Jeyaraj established himself as one of Sri Lanka’s most respected and widely read political commentators, known for his deep reporting, historical analysis, and coverage of the country’s ethnic conflict and political developments.

He contributed to several prominent local publications, and India’s The Hindu.

In later years, while based in Canada, Jeyaraj continued to maintain a strong connection with Sri Lankan public discourse through his columns, essays, and political commentary published on his personal website and in mainstream media. His writings also extended beyond politics to include commentary on Tamil cinema, history, and South Asian affairs.
