It Is Shameful for Tamils to Celebrate Deepavali – A Festival Associated with the Killing of a Tamil King

Even if the well dug by one’s father contains salty water, there are fools who continue to drink it.

Likewise, Tamils continue to celebrate Deepavali, a festival that was not part of their original tradition but was introduced later, mistakenly believing it to be a Tamil festival. Why do Tamils celebrate Deepavali?

  • In northern India, Gujaratis and Marwaris celebrate Deepavali as a festival dedicated to Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth. For them, it marks the beginning of the New Year. Businesspeople traditionally open their new account books on this day.
  • Bengalis celebrate Deepavali as a festival dedicated to Kali or Durga.
  • Deepavali is also a Jain religious festival. It commemorates the dawn on which Vardhamana Mahavira, who was preaching in the city of Pavapuri, passed away.
  • According to another version, Ravana, who ruled Sri Lanka, abducted Sita and held her captive. After killing Ravana in battle and rescuing Sita, Rama returned to Ayodhya with his brother Lakshmana. The people welcomed them by lighting lamps in their homes and celebrating their return.
  • According to the Kanda Puranam, Deepavali is celebrated at the conclusion of the 21-day Kedara Gowri fast observed in honour of Shakti. On that day, Shiva accepted Shakti as half of his body and manifested himself as Ardhanarishvara, the half-male, half-female form.

The Story of Narakasura

According to Hindu mythology, Deepavali marks the day on which an asura named Narakasura was killed.

Narakasura was the son of Bhudevi (Mother Earth) and the king of the kingdom of Kamarupa. Through severe penance directed towards Brahma, the creator god, he obtained numerous boons. Subsequently, he began tormenting the devas. Unable to endure his oppression, the devas approached Mahavishnu at Vaikuntha and appealed for his protection. As usual, Vishnu resolved to rescue them.

However, killing Narakasura was not an easy task for Vishnu. Narakasura had already obtained a boon from Brahma that he could be killed by no one other than his own mother.

Vishnu therefore devised an elaborate plan. He appointed his second wife, Satyabhama, who was believed to be another incarnation of Bhudevi, as his charioteer.

During the battle with Narakasura, an arrow struck Vishnu. He pretended to lose consciousness and collapse. Satyabhama, unaware of his deception, believed that her husband had actually been mortally wounded. She took Vishnu’s bow, aimed an arrow at Narakasura and killed him.

As Narakasura lay dying, Satyabhama asked him what his final wish was.

He replied: “Everyone should celebrate the day of my death.”

Thus, according to this mythological account, Deepavali came to be celebrated as the day Narakasura was killed.

The Puranas describe every incarnation of Mahavishnu, who is revered as the preserver of the universe, as an incarnation intended to destroy asuras.

The Ten Incarnations of Vishnu and the Killing of Asuras

1. Matsya (Fish) Avatar

An asura named Hayagriva, who had the face of a horse, stole the Vedas. Brahma depends on the Vedas to perform his work of creation. Hayagriva stole them with the intention of disrupting that work.

Matsya Murthy discovered that Hayagriva had taken the Vedas and concealed them in his mouth. He fought the asura, killed him, recovered the Vedas and returned them to Brahma.

2. Kurma (Tortoise) Avatar

One day, Sage Durvasa gave a garland presented by Mahavishnu to Indra, the king of the devas. Indra received it carelessly and placed it on the head of his elephant. The garland slipped and fell to the ground, and the elephant trampled upon the divine flowers.

Witnessing this, the sage became furious and cursed Indra:

“Indra, it is through the grace of Mahavishnu that you have obtained your position and distinction. Forgetting this, you have insulted the garland bestowed by Mahalakshmi. Consequently, you shall lose the blessings of Lakshmi and your position as king of the devas.”

As a result of Durvasa’s curse, the entire celestial world was plunged into darkness. The devas lost their strength and powers.

Meanwhile, the asuras grew increasingly powerful. Indra and the other devas, driven from their positions, sought refuge with Brahma.

Brahma was unable to resolve their suffering. They therefore approached Mahavishnu, who was reclining in the ocean of milk, and begged him for relief.

Mahavishnu advised them:

“Indra, you do not possess the strength to defeat the asuras in battle. You should therefore make peace with them and join them in churning the ocean of milk to obtain the divine nectar, Amrita. Drinking it will restore your strength and grant you immortality. You can then regain what you have lost.”

Both the devas and asuras agreed to participate in the churning of the ocean.

The devas wanted to hold the serpent’s tail, while the asuras declared that they were not inferior beings and refused to hold the tail, insisting on holding its head.

Accordingly, the devas held the tail while the asuras held the head. When they began churning the ocean, Mount Mandara sank into its depths.

At that moment, Mahavishnu assumed the form of a giant tortoise, Kurma, entered the ocean and supported the mountain on his back.

Dhanvantari, an aspect of Mahavishnu, emerged carrying the divine nectar in a golden vessel. The asuras rushed forward and seized the vessel before the devas could reach it.

Mahavishnu then assumed the beautiful female form of Mohini. He enchanted the asuras and deceived them by distributing the nectar exclusively among the devas.

Having consumed the nectar, the devas regained their strength and obtained immortality. They defeated the asuras, drove them into the netherworld and recovered their celestial kingdom.

3. Varaha (Boar) Avatar

Once, four great sages were travelling to Vaikuntha to have an audience with Mahavishnu. At the seventh entrance, two guards named Jaya and Vijaya prevented them from proceeding.

The sages, who possessed the privilege of seeing the Lord at any time, became angry and cursed the guards:

“You shall be born on earth!”

Mahavishnu appeared and told the sages:

“The curse you have pronounced upon these two for their misconduct is justified. They will be born three times on earth as terrible asuras. After completing those births, they will ultimately return to me through my grace.”

Sage Kashyapa and Aditi had three sons. The first was Hiranyakashipu and the second was Hiranyaksha. Hiranyakashipu performed severe penance to Brahma and obtained a boon that he could not be killed by anyone or by any weapon. He subsequently brought all three worlds under his control.

Hiranyaksha also obtained boons from Brahma, became extremely powerful and began capturing and killing the devas.

When the earth was submerged in a great deluge, Brahma performed penance to Mahavishnu.

A tiny white boar emerged from his breath. It gradually grew into an enormous creature.

The boar plunged into the ocean to rescue the earth, which had sunk beneath the floodwaters.

Meanwhile, Hiranyaksha, unable to find Varaha anywhere, had become tired of searching and was resting comfortably in the world of the asuras.

At that moment, Narada appeared and informed him:

“Hiranyaksha, Mahavishnu has assumed the form of a boar and is lifting the submerged earth out of the waters.”

Immediately, Hiranyaksha seized his mace and rushed towards Varaha.

As Varaha lifted the earth with his tusks, Hiranyaksha attacked him with his mace. A fierce battle ensued.

Mahavishnu eventually seized Hiranyaksha and struck him forcefully on the head. Hiranyaksha collapsed, vomiting blood, and died. All the devas worshipped Mahavishnu.

4. Narasimha Avatar

When Hiranyakashipu learned that his younger brother Hiranyaksha had been killed by Varaha, he became furious.

He reasoned that Mahavishnu was the protector of the devas and that killing Vishnu would make it easier for him to defeat them.

Hiranyakashipu understood that the sacrifices performed on earth were the source of strength for the devas and Vishnu. He therefore destroyed every place where religious sacrifices were conducted and persecuted the sages.

As a result, the devas were forced to live in hiding on earth.

Hiranyakashipu performed prolonged penance to Brahma and obtained a boon that he could not be killed by anyone or by any weapon, either during the day or at night.

Inflated by arrogance, he enslaved the devas and ruled over all three worlds.

Unable to endure his oppression, the devas appealed to Mahavishnu, who promised to destroy Hiranyakashipu and protect them.

Indra, the king of the devas, sought revenge against Hiranyakashipu. When Hiranyakashipu’s wife was pregnant, Indra took her to an ashram, where she listened to Narada’s teachings about the greatness of Mahavishnu.

The child in her womb also heard these teachings and became a devotee of Vishnu. That child was Prahlada.

Everyone worshipped Hiranyakashipu as their god. However, his own son Prahlada constantly worshipped Mahavishnu.

Prahlada declared:

“Mahavishnu, who is known as Hari, is the one who protects me from all suffering.”

Hiranyakashipu asked him:

“Where is this Hari?”

Prahlada replied:

“The Lord is everywhere. He is in this pillar as well as in the smallest blade of grass.”

He pointed towards a pillar.

Enraged, Hiranyakashipu struck the pillar with his mace. At that moment, Mahavishnu emerged by splitting the pillar, assuming the form of Narasimha, with the face of a lion and the body of a human being.

Hiranyakashipu rushed to attack him. Narasimha tore open his stomach with his claws, pulled out his intestines and wore them as a garland.

Thus Hiranyakashipu was killed.

5. Vamana Avatar

During the battle between the devas and asuras following the churning of the ocean of milk, an asura named Bali was severely wounded.

The other asuras revived him. The sages belonging to the asura lineage and their spiritual preceptor, Shukracharya, restored his former physical strength and powers.

They arranged for him to perform a great sacrificial ceremony. A chariot emerged from the sacrificial fire. Riding it, Bali travelled to the celestial world, defeated Indra and seized Amaravati, the capital of the devas.

He became an emperor known as Mahabali.

Mahabali’s rule extended across all three worlds. The devas were driven from their celestial kingdom and forced to flee.

When Aditi, the mother of the devas, learned what had happened, she was deeply distressed and appealed to her husband, Sage Kashyapa.

He advised her to observe a fast while meditating upon Mahavishnu. She consequently undertook a rigorous twelve-day fast.

Mahavishnu appeared before her and declared:

“Mother of the devas, Mahabali has become powerful through the sacrificial rituals performed by Brahmins. I shall therefore be born as your son to recover the celestial kingdom from him.”

Accordingly, Mahavishnu was born in Aditi’s womb as Vamana, a dwarf.

Vamana, appearing in the form of a short-statured Brahmin, went to the sacrificial arena where Mahabali was performing an Ashvamedha sacrifice.

Mahabali welcomed him, offered him hospitality and invited him to sit down. He washed Vamana’s feet and sprinkled the water upon his own head as a mark of reverence.

He then asked Vamana the purpose of his visit and promised to grant whatever he requested.

Vamana replied:

“Mahabali, you have promised to give me whatever I ask for. All I require is three feet of land measured by my own feet. Grant me that.”

Mahabali was delighted.

“Instead of asking for the three worlds or an entire kingdom, you are asking for just three feet of land. I shall certainly grant your request,” he said.

At that moment, Shukracharya intervened and warned him:

“The dwarf who has come here is none other than Mahavishnu, the enemy of your lineage.”

Mahabali replied:

“Even if he is the enemy of my lineage, I shall never break my promise.”

He then poured water from a vessel brought by his wife, formally granting the requested gift.

Immediately, Vamana began to grow. His body expanded to an enormous size, and Mahabali looked up in astonishment.

Vamana measured the heavens with his first step and the earth with his second.

He then asked:

“I have measured the heavens with one step and the earth with the other. Where shall I place my third step?”

Without hesitation, Mahabali replied:

“Mahavishnu, place your third step upon my head.”

He bowed his head in submission.

Mahavishnu placed his foot upon Mahabali’s head and pressed him down. Mahabali and the asuras associated with him were sent to the netherworld.

6. Rama Avatar

Vishravas had two wives. His first wife, Ilavida, gave birth to Kubera, while his second wife, Kaikasi, gave birth to Ravana.

Ravana also performed severe penance. Brahma appeared before him, and Ravana obtained a boon that he could not be killed by devas, demons or animals.

With the power acquired through his penance, Ravana defeated Indra, the ruler of the celestial world, and captured Amaravati.

Sri Lanka had originally belonged to Kubera. When Ravana expressed his desire to possess the island, Kubera handed it over to his younger brother and conferred upon him the title of King of Lanka.

However, when Ravana sought the boon of immortality from Brahma, he failed to ask for protection against death at the hands of a human being.

Mahavishnu recognised this weakness and announced that he would incarnate as Rama to destroy Ravana.

Rama was born to King Dasharatha and Queen Kausalya.

Rama married Sita. Dasharatha subsequently made arrangements to crown Rama as his successor.

However, Kaikeyi, influenced by her maid Manthara, demanded that her own son Bharata should become king and that Rama should be sent into exile in the forest.

She succeeded in making Dasharatha fulfil these demands.

Accordingly, Rama, Sita and Lakshmana went into exile. Unable to bear the shock of his sons’ departure, Dasharatha died.

The three subsequently left Chitrakuta and lived among sages in the Dandaka forest.

Surpanakha, Ravana’s sister, encountered Rama and became attracted to him. When she approached him, her nose was cut off.

Seeking revenge against Rama for mutilating his sister, Ravana abducted Sita and imprisoned her in the Ashoka Grove in Lanka.

With the assistance of the Vanaras, Rama’s forces constructed a bridge across the sea and reached Lanka.

A fierce war took place between Rama’s army and Ravana’s forces. Eventually, Rama killed Ravana and crowned his younger brother Vibhishana as the ruler of Lanka.

The Asuras and the Aryan–Dravidian Conflict

Whichever Purana one examines, the recurring theme is that the asuras or rakshasas oppressed the devas and that the gods assumed various incarnations, taking the forms of fish, tortoise, boar and other creatures, to destroy them.

These stories, according to the interpretation presented here, are symbolic representations of the conflicts between the Aryan and Dravidian peoples of ancient times.

The word Sura means one who drinks, while Asura means one who does not drink.

The Rig Veda states that the Aryans consumed Soma, a ritual intoxicating drink. They even worshipped the Soma plant as a deity.

During sacrificial ceremonies, animals such as horses, cattle, goats and monitor lizards were cooked and consumed by the Aryans as offerings known as Avirbhagam.

Yet the Aryans who consumed Soma and other intoxicating drinks were portrayed as superior beings. Those who killed and ate horses and cattle were called devas.

On the other hand, those who rejected such practices out of compassion, kindness, mercy and ethical considerations were derogatorily described as asuras, rakshasas or yakshas.

The Questionable Deeds of Parashurama

According to mythology, Parashurama killed his own mother and brother at the command of his father and earned a reputation as a great warrior.

A king named Kartavirya Arjuna seized the divine cow Kamadhenu. Using this as a pretext, Parashurama killed the king and proceeded to exterminate the Kshatriya rulers of the earth with his axe, supposedly to ensure that they would never rise again.

How can someone who killed his own mother, his own brother and countless asuras be regarded as an incarnation of God?

What moral lesson are devotees expected to learn from such an incarnation?

What kind of righteousness justifies exterminating an entire class of rulers simply because one king committed a wrongdoing?

Is the underlying assumption that every ruler who governed the earth belonged to the asura community?

Rama and Ravana: An Aryan–Dravidian Conflict?

The war between Rama and Ravana was, according to this interpretation, a conflict between the Aryan and Dravidian peoples.

Jawaharlal Nehru clearly referred to this interpretation in his book The Discovery of India.

In the Aranya Kanda, Chapter 10, Rama is portrayed as saying that he came to the forest specifically to kill the rakshasas and that he had pledged to destroy them.

What Tamil Scholars Have Said About Deepavali

The eminent Tamil scholar, professor and Saiva intellectual K. Subramania Pillai, in his book Tamilar Samayam (The Religion of the Tamils), writes:

“Deepavali is not a festival belonging to the Tamils. It belongs to the Puranic religious tradition. It is not right for Tamils to rejoice over the killing of asuras.”

Professor Saiva Periyar A. Ki. Parandhamanar, in his book The History of the Madurai Nayak Kings, clearly explains:

“Deepavali is the New Year and new-account-opening festival celebrated by the Marwaris and Gujaratis of northern India. Deepavali has absolutely no connection with the Tamils or with Tamil literature.”

The scholar Mayilai Seeni Venkatasamy, in his book Jainism and Tamil (Samanamum Tamilum), points out:

“There is no connection whatsoever between the history of Deepavali and the mythological story of Narakasura. The word Deepavali means a row of lamps: Deepam means lamp, and Avali means row.”

Maraimalai Adigal, the great Saiva Tamil scholar, wrote in his book Tamilar Matham (The Religion of the Tamils):

“Deepavali is an imaginary story fabricated by Aryan Brahmins.”

He further wrote:

“Surans, Ravanas and others who destroyed the frenzied sacrificial rituals practised by the Aryans were none other than incomparable Tamil kings, whom the Aryans disparagingly described as rakshasas.”

(Vellalar Civilisation, page 60.)

Some may dismiss Maraimalai Adigal’s statements by arguing that he was a Tamil nationalist and an ardent advocate of pure Tamil. Therefore, let us also consider what Swami Vivekananda, a disciple of Ramakrishna Paramahamsa, had to say.

Vivekananda stated:

“The people who lived in South India have been described in the Ramayana as monkeys and demons.”

(Lectures and Writings on the Ramayana, pages 587–589.)

Tamils Must Think!

How long are Tamils going to continue celebrating Deepavali like oxen endlessly turning a mill, accepting stories that contradict practical reality and the realities of human life, and which are used in the name of religion and God to demean the Tamil people?

The great poet Mahakavi Bharathiyar once expressed his anguish:

“Tamils live like buffaloes, always lying in wet surroundings; they cook in wet conditions and eat in wet conditions. A truly great Tamil is nowhere to be found, not even by searching with medicine!”

His bitter observation remains relevant even today.

Tamils, think for yourselves!

Do not celebrate Deepavali, a festival that serves to demean us through the glorification of Aryan mythology. To continue celebrating it despite knowing its implications is an affront to our dignity and self-respect.
