Suren Surendiran speaks about equality at Maha Nayaka ‘Sannas’ paper presentation ceremony

The Sannas paper presentation ceremony for the appointment of Ven. Dr Madampagama Assaji Thissa Thero, as the Maya Nayaka of Amarapura Maha Nikaya chapter, was held on 7 December 2024 at the BMICH.

This grant of credentials ceremony was completed with the presence of religious leaders and many esteemed guests. As a respected guest, Mr Suren Surendiran, the Chairman of Global Tamil Forum (GTF), has delivered a speech highlighting the importance of equality. His speech is as follows:

Greetings to all!

“My name is Suren Surendiran. I came from London to participate in this momentous event of formally appointing our dearest Hamuduruwo as a Mahanayake. I am filled with joy as we celebrate Hamuduruwo’s elevation to the highest position in a Buddhist Chapter.

I am especially humbled by his invitation to deliver a speech today despite knowing that my Sinhala is not perfect. To my knowledge, no other Tamil individual was given an opportunity to speak at a Buddhist event of this significance. Hamuduruwo exemplifies equality through this gesture, demonstrating the true spirit of inclusivity taught by Lord Buddha.

At this juncture, I am reminded of one of the teachings of Lord Buddha, the Vasala Soottra, which beautifully highlights the essence of equality. Let me share a verse from it:

“Na jajjaa vasalo hoathi, na jajjaa hoathi brāhmaṇo.

Kammanaa vasalo hoathi, kammanaa hoathi brāhmaṇo.”

(True worth, as Buddha taught, is determined by one’s actions and not by social or hereditary status.)

My first ever interaction with Hamuduruwo was in February 2010 when we invited him to the inauguration event of the Global Tamil Forum at the UK Parliament. I want us to remind ourselves of that time in Sri Lanka, which was marked by disappearances in white vans and a time when even the bloodshed during the war was still wet. When we invited Hamuduruwo to our event in London, we believed that it was an act of courage on our part. However, the real courage lay in Hamuduruwo’s decision to travel all the way to London and stand with us, speaking about equality in the British Parliament before our community.

Our dear Hamuduruwo’s work with the Dharmashakthi Organisation, a multi-faith organisation promoting coexistence and equality and the major role he played in the creation of the Himalayan Declaration reflects his commitment to promoting equality not just in words but in practice.”

“Thank you for giving me this historical opportunity to attend and speak at an event celebrating the success of a religious leader who believes in equality wholeheartedly. I end my speech by saying my community and I are very grateful.

அவைக்கு வண்க்கம்!” என்று தமிழில் வணக்கத்துடன் ஆரம்பித்து சிங்களத்தில் தொடர்ந்த உரை பின் வருமாறு

“என் பெயர் சுரேன் சுரேந்திரன். எமது அன்பிற்குரிய தேரரை மாநாயக்கராக உத்தியோகபூர்வமாக நியமிக்கும் இந்த முக்கியமான நிகழ்வில் பங்குபற்றுவதற்காக நான் லண்டனில் இருந்து வருகை தந்துள்ளேன். பௌத்தமத அத்தியாயத்தில் தேரரை மிக உயர்ந்த நிலைக்கு உயர்த்தியதை நாங்கள் கொண்டாடும் இந்த நிகழ்ச்சியில் பங்கேற்பதையிட்டு நான் பெரிதும் மகிழ்ச்சியடைகின்றேன்.
எனது சிங்களப் பேச்சுத் திறன் குறைவு என்று தெரிந்திருந்தும் இன்று உரை நிகழ்த்துவதற்கு அவர் எனக்கு விடுத்த அழைப்பையிட்டு நான் பணிவடைகிறேன். எனக்கு தெரிந்தபடி, இத்தகைய முக்கியத்துவம் வாய்ந்ததொரு சிங்கள பௌத்த நிகழ்வில் உரையாற்றுவதற்கு இதுவரையில் வேறு எந்தத் தமிழருக்கும் வாய்ப்பு வழங்கப்படவில்லை என்று நான் நம்புகிறேன். தேரரின் இந்தச் செயலின் மூலம் சமத்துவத்தை எடுத்துக் காண்பித்துள்ளார். புத்தபெருமான் போதித்த உள்ளடக்கத்தின் உண்மையான உணர்வை வெளிப்படுத்தியுள்ளார்.

சமத்துவத்தின் சாரத்தை அழகாக எடுத்துரைக்கும் புத்தபெருமானின் போதனைகளில் ஒன்றான வாசல சூத்திரம் இந்த நேரத்தில் எனக்கு நினைவுக்கு வருகிறது. அதிலிருந்து ஒரு சிறிய பகுதியைப் பகிர்ந்து கொள்கிறேன்:

‘ந ஜஜ்ஜா வஸலோ ஹோதி,
ந ஜஜ்ஜா ஹோதி பிராமணோ.
கம்மனா வாசலோ ஹோதி,
கம்மனா ஹோதி பிராமணோ.’

இதன் கருத்து; புத்தர் கற்பித்தது போல், உண்மையான மதிப்பு, ஒருவரின் செயல்களால் தீர்மானிக்கப்படுகிறது, சமூக அல்லது பரம்பரை நிலையால் அல்ல.

பெப்ரவரி 2010இல் இங்கிலாந்து பாராளுமன்றத்தில் உலகத் தமிழ் பேரவையின் தொடக்க நிகழ்வுக்கு தேரரை அழைத்தபோதுதான் தேரருடனான எனது முதல் உரையாடல் ஆரம்பமானது.

போர் நிறைவு பெற்று இச் சிறிய காலத்திலேயே எங்கள் நிகழ்வுக்கு ஒரு சிங்கள பௌத்த தேரரை லண்டனுக்கு அழைத்தபோது, அது எங்களின் துணிச்சலான செயல் என்று நாங்கள் நம்பினோம்.

இலங்கையில் பலர் வெள்ளை வான்கள் மூலமாக காணாமலாக்கப்பட்டிருந்த காலத்தையும், போரின் போது சிந்திய இரத்தம் இன்னமும் காயாத காலத்தை நான் நினைவுபடுத்த விரும்புகின்றேன்.

அப்படியான ஒரு பயங்கரமான காலத்தில் தேரரின் லண்டனுக்கு பயணிக்கும் தீர்மானமும், எங்களோடு சேர்ந்து சகோதர்த்துவத்தைப் பேணி இருந்தமையும், பிரித்தானிய பாராளுமன்றத்தில் சமத்துவம் பற்றி எமது சமூகத்தின் முன்பாக உரையாற்றியமையும் அவருடைய உண்மையான தைரியத்தை வெளிப்படுத்தியது.

சகவாழ்வு மற்றும் சமத்துவத்தை ஊக்குவிக்கும் பன்முக நம்பிக்கை அமைப்பான தர்மசக்தி அமைப்புடன் எங்கள் அன்பான வணக்கத்துக்குரிய தேரரின் பணி மற்றும் இமாலய பிரகடனத்தை உருவாக்குவதில் அவர் ஆற்றிய முக்கிய பங்கு, வார்த்தைகளில் மட்டுமல்ல, நடைமுறையிலும் சமத்துவத்தை மேம்படுத்துவதற்கான அவரது அர்ப்பணிப்பை பிரதிபலிக்கிறது.”

தொடர்ந்து தமிழில் பின் வருமாறு பேசி முடித்த உரை;

“இப்படியான ஒரு பௌத்த சமய முக்கியத்தும் வாய்ந்த நிகழ்வில் சரித்திரம் படைக்கும் இந்த அரிய சந்தர்ப்பத்தை எனக்கு அளித்ததற்கு எனதும் எனது சமூகத்தினதும் நன்றியையும் வாழ்த்துக்களையும் மீண்டும் கூறி என் உரையை முடித்துக் கொள்கிறேன்.”
